Protected Area Management Effectiveness

Since 2015, the GRAA has been involved in refining the Management Effectiveness Tracking Tool (METT) which is currently being used in South Africa. The project involved the GRAA analysing the trends of METT score indicators, reporting to theSouth African  Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) on the reliability of METT score data and advising DEA on intervention strategies to improve protected area management effectiveness.

The GRAA also visited and audited over 60 protected areas and has lead a number of training workshops to develop capacity in the use of METT as part of the adaptive management process. METT assessments have also been facilitated by GRAA beyond South Africa's borders in order to help identify next steps needed to improve management effectiveness in these protected areas.

In 2017, a GRAA team lead the further refinement of the METT-SA tool alongside DEA to incorporate the inclusion of Ramsar sites. In 2018, the GRAA continued is relationship with DEA to develop an integrated web-based version of the tool that was rolled out in over 230 protected areas in 2019.
